Incoming ARU student Kate shares her love of creative writing, an Australian experience and her dreams of becoming a published writer
As a student of creative writing and lover of words, Kate is usually the one doing the writing. Now, we’ve put her in the hot seat to hear about her experiences abroad and her passion for all things fiction.
Name: Kate
Home country: The Philippines
University: Anglia Ruskin University
Course: MA Creative Writing and Publishing
Fun fact: Kate’s favourite genre is crime/thriller!
Tell us a little bit about yourself…
“I got my first degree in 2018, when I graduated from a university in Philippines with a degree in Creative Writing. In my junior year, I went on a semester abroad in Australia, so I have some experience of studying abroad.”
Wow! What was it like to live in Australia?
“Really great! I was so excited about it. The main thing I took away from it was that it really reminded me how much I love writing. The semester before, I was feeling really burnt out from school, and just writing for the sake of having something to submit. When I got to Australia, the change in people and new surroundings gave me a new perspective, which was a great source of inspiration. If I got the chance to return, I’d definitely take it!”
What’s your favourite genre to read or write about?
“I try to be open when it comes to what I read, making sure I vary it so it’s always fresh. One genre I really enjoy is crime writing – like thriller type stuff. I enjoy watching true crime too, and researching the stories! I’m hoping to squeeze in more writing time around work as I’ve not had much of it recently. I’ve been reading a lot of non-fiction lately too. It’s an area that I find more challenging, so I’m looking forward to developing it.”
What did you get up to once you graduated?
“Since graduating, I’ve been working as a Junior Editor editing transcripts of interviews about different topics including business, entertainment, and many more! I’ve been very fortunate with my experience because I applied to lots of jobs and only got a few responses, but I didn’t have to wait too long. Last year, when the pandemic hit, I lost my job and it was really tough. I’m still grateful though as I then found a job which I really enjoy and am pretty good at – I’m really blessed.”
So, how did you decide on MA Creative Writing and Publishing at ARU?
“I always knew I wanted to go to grad school, even when I was still in college. I dreamt of being a published writer and editor, and I’ll only get there by exposing myself to an environment where I learn how to really improve, how to work with editors and agents, and how to sell myself in the industry. Most unis only offer MA Creative Writing, so I was so pleased to find that ARU had the Publishing component too. Their programme covers the topics that I need, and I’m really excited about it.”
What excites you the most about moving to the UK?
“Aside from the fact I’ve always wanted to go, I really consider this a new challenge. I’m nervous for the different environment and experiences, and because I’ll be away for a much longer period of time. But that’s also what makes me excited! It’s a great opportunity to develop as a person. In fact, I read a post that said: “you can’t grow if you stay in your comfort zone.” For me, setting up my life in the UK is a way of stepping out.”
Kate has never travelled to the UK before, and is excited to finally have a reason to do so! “I’ve been checking out the ARU Instagram page to see what the campus looks like, and doing lots of research on the website.” That said, she’s being cautious in her preparations: “The pandemic situation is still developing, so I’m slowly taking the necessary steps and keeping an eye out for updates.”
