Sorry, sorry, excuse me - Becky adapts after moving from The Land of Smiles to the Land of Politeness

Becky has taken the leap and moved from Thailand to England to pursue her love of English and Computer Science at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

From red phone boxes to British politeness, is Becky really 'alright'? Find out how her experience has been so far…

Thailand to England is a HUGE move. What inspired you?

It is a HUGE move for me. I wanted to practise my English language and improve my knowledge and skills in Computer Science.

I also wanted to learn new things outside of my comfort zone. In the end, the inspiration came only from within myself.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when you first arrived?

Well! That is the weather! And perhaps the biggest barrier is the English language.

How did you prepare for the move?

I got information from the university via email, and I explored the website to get the information and prepare myself to come here.

Why did you become a student ambassador?

I love to communicate with people so I joined the Buddy Scheme at ARU. I am also a student ambassador within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

These experiences are why I became an ambassador for the ARU CampusConnect app.

What is your favorite thing about the app?

My favorite thing in the app is chatting with groups or individuals that I can clearly help or guide to prepare them for their new start abroad.

What is the weirdest English experience you've had since living here?

- The sentence Are you all right? - I didn't know that this is supposed to mean How are you? It’s quite weird for me! Another thing is that English people say Excuse me and Sorry a lot when they are speaking! Maybe it’s politeness?

I’ve also learnt that English people eat a sandwich with crisps, and have English breakfast with a cup of tea.

Another fact I’ve learnt is that The United Kingdom has 4 countries and Great Britain has 3 countries!

Tell me something you wish you had known before you arrived?

The red telephone box is iconic for Brits.

People here in the UK often think of my home country, Thailand, as the LAND OF SMILES.

It is always raining and you don’t often see the sun!
