Business Management student Kunal shares his tips on the ‘Top 10 Ways to Make the Most of University’

By Lauren Valentine

Travelling overseas to pursue higher education is one of the biggest decisions a student ever makes. There are so many mixed feelings that come prior to commencing the journey to a new country – a new life even!

Kunal says the most common thoughts that run through the mind of an international student are: “What will my new university experience be like?”, “How will the people around me be?” and “What’s the education system like there?”

Kunal has kindly shared his top ten tips with us on how to get the most out of your university to put incoming students’ minds at rest.

  1. Don’t miss the orientation programme that is organised by your university. For example, here at the University of Limerick, the International Education Division runs a great one. That’s the best way to find out what the university has to offer you.

  2. Join clubs and societies. These are a great way to get involved in something that you are interested in and – importantly – make new friends!

  3. Go on trips that are organized by the Student Union and the International Society. This could be as simple as a visit to the local IKEA, or a coach trip to a nearby national park. You can get to know your new hometown, as well as the people.

  4. Check your emails regularly to get updates on any workshops, seminars or other events that take place at the university. Those sessions tend to be informative and useful.

  5. Volunteer as much as you can. It’s a brilliant opportunity to lend a hand and interact with a diverse range of people. It’ll also boost your CV!

  6. Make the most of your university library, both physically and online. For example, UL has Europe's biggest digitally controlled library: the Glucksman Library. It’s full of incredible and informative resources.

  7. Register yourself in the gym or sports arena and get a chance to choose from a wide range of sports, along with swimming pool access and gym facilities.

  8. Try to book accommodation on campus. It will be easier to get yourself involved in numerous activities that run throughout the year at university.

  9. Before you arrive in your new city, register for a buddy programme which will put you in touch with a current student and potentially your first friend at the university. You’ll get insights on university life, culture and events.

  10. Don’t be afraid to talk to people. Go on, talk to them. Ask for help whenever required, they would love to help you. You won’t get to know someone unless you approach and have a chat with them. Don’t wait for someone to come and talk to you, you can take the initiative and spark a conversation! You never know, you may find a great friend in that stranger.

We’d like to thank Kunal for his indispensable tips for any student about to embark upon their new journey.
